What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting (cryolipolysis) is an FDA-cleared non-invasive body contouring treatment that freezes and eliminates stubborn fat cells. The device suctions targeted fat bulges and cools them to a precise temperature that triggers fat cell death (apoptosis) without damaging surrounding tissue. Over the following 2–3 months, your body naturally processes and eliminates the dead fat cells. CoolSculpting can reduce fat in treated areas by 20–25% per session. Common treatment areas include the abdomen, flanks, thighs, double chin, bra fat, and upper arms.

Recovery & Aftercare

CoolSculpting requires no downtime. The treated area may be red, swollen, tender, or numb for 1–2 weeks. Some patients experience a tingling, stinging, or cramping sensation that resolves within days. Temporary firmness in the treated area is normal. Results develop gradually over 2–3 months as fat cells are eliminated. A second treatment may be recommended after 2–3 months for optimal results.

Risks & Side Effects

Common side effects include temporary numbness, redness, bruising, swelling, and tingling. A rare but serious complication called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH) can cause the treated area to enlarge instead of shrink. PAH is more common in men and occurs in approximately 0.05% of treatments. It requires surgical correction.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many CoolSculpting sessions do I need?

Most patients see good results from 1–2 sessions per treatment area. Your provider will create a customized treatment plan during your consultation.

When will I see CoolSculpting results?

Initial results appear in 3–4 weeks, with the most dramatic changes visible at 2–3 months. The body continues eliminating fat cells for up to 6 months.

Is CoolSculpting a weight loss treatment?

No. CoolSculpting is a body contouring treatment for stubborn fat pockets that resist diet and exercise. It's designed for people near their target weight who want to reduce specific problem areas.

How long do CoolSculpting results last?

Results are permanent because destroyed fat cells don't regenerate. However, remaining fat cells can still expand if you gain weight, so maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important.
