What is Kybella?

Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable treatment that permanently destroys fat cells under the chin (submental fat), commonly known as a 'double chin.' The active ingredient is synthetic deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule that breaks down dietary fat. When injected into submental fat, Kybella disrupts fat cell membranes, and the body gradually eliminates the destroyed cells over 4–6 weeks. Once destroyed, those fat cells cannot store fat again. Most patients need 2–4 treatment sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart.

Recovery & Aftercare

Significant swelling under the chin is expected and can last 1–2 weeks (nicknamed 'bullfrog chin'). Numbness, bruising, and firmness are common. Most patients take 2–3 days off work due to visible swelling. Apply ice and sleep elevated. Avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours. Results become visible as swelling subsides and continue improving over 6–8 weeks.

Risks & Side Effects

Common side effects include swelling (100% of patients), numbness, bruising, pain at injection sites, and temporary nerve injury causing an uneven smile (resolves in weeks). Rare risks include skin necrosis if injected outside the submental area, difficulty swallowing, and facial muscle weakness. Always choose an experienced provider.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Kybella treatments do I need?

Most patients need 2–4 treatments spaced 4–6 weeks apart. The maximum FDA-approved course is 6 treatments. Results are permanent once fat cells are destroyed.

Is Kybella better than liposuction for double chin?

Kybella is non-surgical with no anesthesia or incisions, but requires multiple sessions and causes significant swelling. Liposuction is a one-time procedure with faster results but involves surgery. The best choice depends on your fat volume, budget, and tolerance for downtime.
